Tips & guides
Practical guides from our DeSoto irrigation team: how to spot sprinkler problems, fix the simple ones yourself, and know when it is time to call a pro.
How do you know if a sprinkler valve is bad? Learn the top warning signs, their causes and fixes, and how to test your valves step by step.
Watch for water that will not turn off, leaks, stuck valves, irregular watering, electrical faults or an unusually high water bill.
CPVC vs PVC for lawn irrigation: compare temperature limits, strength, size, cost and uses to choose the right pipe for your sprinkler system.
CPVC handles up to 200F, while PVC tops out at 140F, which is the main difference.
How to choose an irrigation timer: compare mechanical, electronic and hybrid types, plus zones, programs, smart features and useful efficiency options.
Pick a mechanical timer for budget, or an electronic timer for remote control and weather-based changes.
Learn how to improve water pressure for sprinklers: test pressure, find leaks, upgrade the water line, add a booster pump and fine-tune your sprinkler heads.
Attach a pressure gauge to the outdoor faucet; below 40 PSI, sprinklers may struggle to cover the lawn.
Are high efficiency sprinkler heads worth it? See how they save water, handle pressure, cost more upfront, and who benefits most from switching.
High-efficiency heads apply water more slowly, about 0.8 inches per hour versus around 2 for standard spray heads.
Learn the purpose of a solenoid valve in an irrigation system, how it opens and closes water flow by zone, the valve types, and how to maintain it.
A solenoid valve opens when the controller sends power and closes when power stops, controlling each zone.
Is hand watering a lawn better than using sprinklers? Compare coverage, water use, time, root growth and cost to decide which suits your yard.
Choose hand watering only for small lawns, potted plants and flower beds.
Find out why your sprinkler head is not spraying far enough, from dirt build-up and weak water pressure to misaligned nozzles and worn parts.
Clear small blockages from the nozzle opening and clean muddy residue from the irrigation line.
Compare the 5 most popular types of pop-up sprinkler heads, from rotary and fixed spray to bubbler heads, and pick the right one for your yard.
Choose rotary heads for larger lawns, since they cover longer distances with steady, slow streams.
